The Junior League of Sarasota (JLS) invites the community to support its Little Black Dress Initiative beginning Monday,
November 29 and running through December 3, 2021. During the week-long social media campaign, participating JLS members will wear one black dress for five consecutive days to symbolize the restrictions that poverty places on choices, opportunities, and access to
everyday resources. By sharing on their social platforms, JLS members aim to harness the power of social media and drive donations for The League’s charitable efforts that support local families, women, children, and young adults aging out of foster care.
“The Little Black Dress Initiative is a unique way for The League to highlight the impact of poverty on families in our community," said Ella Lewis, 2021 League President. “We know these issues are complex with far-reaching implications, and our members are invested in
supporting wherever possible.”
Founded in 2014 by the Junior League of London, the Little Black Dress Initiative (LBDI) has since been taken on by leagues across the United States. This is the third year that JLS has participated in the campaign, as an extension of its commitment to being a change agent and a force for good within the Sarasota community. “The goal is for our members to facilitate conversations through peer-to-peer advocacy about issues of poverty affecting our community, especially facing children who are aging out of the foster care system,” said LBDI Co-Chairs Carly Evans and Grace Hamlin. “Our hope is that people will make donations through our social media campaign, which will go toward The League’s charitable efforts.”
