HOW THE EVENT STARTED
The Junior League of London pioneered the Little Black Dress Initiative (LBDI) in 2014 with the goal to “Make Poverty Unfashionable.” While their fellow Londoners were attending London Fashion Week, local Junior Leaguers were wearing the same black dress every day to work, parties, dinners, and events to increase awareness and raise funds for poverty in the city. The first campaign was so successful that they decided to take the initiative worldwide.
LBDI is often a week-long, social media driven fundraising campaign that uses the iconic Little Black Dress to raise awareness about poverty and its effect in society. Participants wear one little black dress for five consecutive days and are encouraged to harness the power of their social networks. By wearing the same little black dress each day for one week, each participant is illustrating the effects poverty can have on women and children’s access to resources, confidence and opportunities.
JOIN THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF SARASOTA IN YOUR BLACK MASK OR DRESS
The Junior League of Sarasota will wear a little black mask and/or dress for five consecutive days, drawing attention to support and assistance of the youth aging out of the foster care system in Sarasota County. These young adults are more often unprepared for living as adults, and are often more susceptible to the effects of poverty. Your support and donations will enable us to identify where we can make an impact, utilize our resources, and partner with community agencies to help these 13-22 year olds with what they need to thrive.
