The Hunger Outreach initiative is the Junior League of Sarasota’s signature focus. Through our Hunger Outreach committee, we host slow cooker classes, as we have done since the 2015-2016 league year. We continue to do so through our partnership with All Faiths Food Bank and their “Cooking Matters” program. We host many classes in partnership with other non-profits such as Girls Inc., The Boys and Girls Club, The Lighthouse of Manasota, and The Orchard Place. During these classes, we teach participants how to economically shop for and make easy meals to feed their families. At the end of the class, each person gets to take home a slow cooker, a meal they make during class, a slow cooker recipe book, and a bag full of kitchen essentials such as can openers and measuring cups. In addition, our Kids in the Kitchen committee teaches classes to youth in our community, teaching them about healthy food choices. League members volunteer at All Faiths Food Bank and the Mayor’s Feed the Hungry event each year.
