11 Aug Legacy Luncheon
The 16th Annual Legacy Luncheon
Monday, February 26, 2018
Judy Woodruff – broadcast journalist, anchor and managing editor of the PBSNewsHour – was the guest speaker at the 16th Annual Legacy Luncheon held at Michael’s On East Ballroom.
Woodruff told the sell-out crowd of League members and community supporters her perspective on life as a journalist in the nation’s capital today. She discussed a variety of current topics including proposed gun-control legislation, the #MeToo movement, her thoughts on the future role of women in politics and how to be an educated news consumer. Woodruff recounted one of her favorite interviews with Washington Post publisher Katherine Graham.
Just this past October, Arizona State University presented Judy and her co-anchor, the late Gwen Ifill, with the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism. In November, Woodruff received the Poynter Institute’s Medal of Lifetime Achievement in Journalism in St. Petersburg, Florida. This award honors a journalist or member of the media whose work has had a lasting impact serving citizens in our democracy.
Following a delicious lunch and Woodruff’s talk, the winners of The World Comes to Sarasota Auction were revealed. The lucky recipient of the Signature Auction item, a custom-designed necklace and earrings by Sustainer Belinda Coffrin of Coffrin Jewelers was Graci McGillicuddy, a Legacy Sponsor.
Proceeds from the event will be added to the League’s Endowment Fund and will help support the League’s ongoing work in the Sarasota community.
