Done in a Day (DIAD) refers to a community project that can be completed in one day, or an 8 hour time frame. Done in a Meeting (DIAM) refers to a project that can be completed during one of our general membership meetings and typically takes 10 – 15 minutes to complete. The Junior League of Sarasota, Inc. provides DIAD and DIAM applications to more than 400 agencies in Sarasota County each summer. The DIAD committee makes a recommendation to the Board for a selection of projects, the number of projects are based on the year’s budget.
The Hunger Outreach committee has been busy providing much needed resources to the families in Sarasota and surrounding communities who need it most. We started the year off by partnering with Healthy Start Coalition of Sarasota County and the Big Latch-On event. The Big Latch-On is a celebration event for women that promotes and supports breastfeeding and offers peer support to each other. For the event, we donated 1,000 baby onesies to be distributed during the event and were also given out to new mothers at local hospitals.
Another component of the overall nutrition initiative, KITK specifically empowers children in Kindergarten through 6th grade and their families to make healthy choices about nutrition and fitness and fight against childhood obesity. This program inspired by the Junior League of Calgary’s Junior Chefs program began in 2006 and is now promoted in more than 200 communities across four countries. Locally we partner with organizations, festivals and events that serve this demongraphic in order to do hands on demonstrations for children and families in our community.
The Hunger Outreach committee continues to host slow cooker classes, as we have done since the 2015-2016 league year. We continue to do so through our partnership with All Faiths Food Bank and their “Cooking Matters”program.
